I was in the mood for BOR and just got through listening
to a couple of different versions I have.
Compare: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1973-03-28.sbd.miller.86459.sbeok.flac16

With: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1988-07-17.sbd.miller.87752.sbeok.flac16

Amazing how little change in Phils voice over 15 years.
Of course you will need to filter Donna's voice out of the
'73 version and concentrate on Phils.
Not that there's is anything wrong with Donna's voice.
Uncanny how little Phils voice changed through the years.
Maybe because he sang little compared to Jerry and Bob?

There are some who would argue that what Phil did couldn't actually be called singing.

As for Donna, well, you all know my feeling about that one.

OK, that is a bit harsh.

Actually, I think it changed more from 65-70; ie, compare the ITEMRain with Box (AmBeat). Then, if I may, "early era" you, I think it changed slightly from 70-73 or 75, and led to him "retiring"...may not have changed after that? As you note.

And, though I love him to death, his best was hard work in the studio as harmonizer on 70's albums, IMHO. Also liked him on Mars Hotel, but in an "idiosyncratic" fashion if you will...

The studio "Box" was as good as that tune ever got- very rare indeed for a Dead song.
